Vortrag: Marion Steiner, Universidad de Chile

Ausgehend von einer technik-, wirtschafts- und kulturhistorischen Analyse des Elektrizitätsgeschäfts Berliner Unternehmen und Banken in Lateinamerika zu Ende des 19. und Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts beleuchtet mein Vortrag das industriekulturelle Erbe aus dieser Zeit in Valparaíso, Chile. Im Hinterland dieser einst als Handels- und Finanzzentrum wichtigsten Stadt an der Westküste Südamerikas, nahe der kleinen Siedlung Placilla, baute ein von AEG und Deutscher Bank gegründetes Konsortium das Wasserkraftsystem El Sauce y La Luz, das –wenn auch in weitgehend ruinösem Zustand– bis heute erhalten ist. 

Diese 1906 in Betrieb genommenen und 1910 fertiggestellten Anlagen sind nicht nur ein Wasserkraftprojekt der AEG, das wegen seiner Frühzeitigkeit weltweit einmalig ist. Sie sind zudem als geteiltes Erbe zwischen der legendären „Elektropolis“ Berlin und der historischen Welthafenstadt Valparaíso verstehen. Der Umstand, dass beide Städte zum UNESCO-Welterbe gehören, macht eine kritische Geschichtsschreibung und Auseinandersetzung mit der aktuellen Erbekonstruktion in beiden Städten umso interessanter und die Forschung dazu umso notwendiger. Dies gemeinsam zu tun, ermöglicht die Konstruktion eines „glokalen“ Erbes, das beide Orte miteinander verbindet und auch die Schattenseiten des deutschen Imperialismus in den Blick nimmt.

Im Zentrum des Vortrags stehen die bisherigen gemeinsamen Bemühungen aus der internationalen Forschungs- und der lokalen Erbegemeinschaft, die sich im Historischen Museum und dem Nachbarschaftszentrum von Placilla bündeln. Seit nunmehr über 10 Jahren kämpfen wir für eine Anerkennung der Denkmalwerte dieser Anlagen, die aktuell keinerlei offiziellen Schutzstatus haben, für die Bevölkerung vor Ort aber mittlerweile zu einem Anker ihrer sozialen und kulturellen Identität geworden sind.

Der Vortrag ist Teil meines chilenischen Forschungsprojektes ANID-FONDECYT INICIACIÓN 11230957 in Kooperation mit der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, der TU Berlin und dem Berliner Zentrum Industriekultur.

Electrópolis en ultramar.
Historiografías glocales y patrimonio compartido

A partir de un análisis de la historia técnica, económica y cultural del negocio eléctrico de las compañías y bancos berlineses en América Latina a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, mi conferencia arrojará luz sobre el patrimonio industrial de este periodo en Valparaíso, Chile. En las afueras de esta ciudad, antaño el centro comercial y financiero más importante de la costa oeste de Sudamérica, cerca de la pequeña localidad de Placilla, un consorcio fundado por AEG y Deutsche Bank construyó el sistema hidroeléctrico El Sauce y La Luz, que –aunque en un estado en gran parte ruinoso– aún se conserva en la actualidad.

Estas instalaciones, que entraron en funcionamiento en 1906 y cuya construcción fue terminada en 1910, no sólo son un proyecto hidroeléctrico de la AEG único en el mundo por su precocidad. Además representan un patrimonio compartido entre la mítica “Electropolis” Berlín y la histórica ciudad portuaria mundial de Valparaíso. El hecho de que ambas ciudades sean Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO hace aún más interesante una historiografía crítica y un examen de la actual construcción social del patrimonio en ambas ciudades, y aún más necesaria su investigación. Hacerlo juntos permite construir un patrimonio “glocal” que conecta los dos lugares y echa un vistazo también al lado oscuro del imperialismo alemán.

Mi presentación se centra en los esfuerzos conjuntos de la comunidad investigadora internacional y la comunidad patrimonial local de Valparaíso, que se concentran en el Museo Histórico y Centro Cultural de Placilla. Llevamos más de 10 años luchando por el reconocimiento del valor patrimonial de estos sitios, que actualmente no cuentan con un estatus de protección oficial pero que ya se han convertido en un ancla de identidad social y cultural para la población local.

La conferencia forma parte de mi proyecto de investigación chileno ANID-FONDECYT INICIACIÓN 11230957 en cooperación con la Universidad Bauhaus de Weimar, la TU Berlín y el Centro Berlinés del Patrimonio Industrial BZI.

Electropolis overseas.
Glocal historiographies and shared heritage

Based on an analysis of the technical, economic and cultural history of the electricity business of Berlin companies and banks in Latin America at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, my lecture will shed light on the industrial heritage of this period in Valparaíso, Chile. In the hinterland of this city, once the most important commercial and financial centre on the west coast of South America, near the small town of Placilla, a consortium founded by AEG and Deutsche Bank built the hydroelectric system El Sauce y La Luz, which –albeit in a largely ruinous state– is still preserved today.

These facilities, which went into operation in 1906 and were completed in 1910, are not only an AEG hydroelectric project unique in the world for its precocity. They are also a shared heritage between the legendary “Electropolis” Berlin and the historic world port city of Valparaíso. The fact that both cities are UNESCO World Heritage Sites makes a critical historiography and examination of the current construction of heritage in both cities all the more interesting, and research into it all the more necessary. Doing this together enables the construction of a “glocal” heritage that connects the two places and also addresses the dark sides of German imperialism.
My presentation will focus on the joint efforts of the international research community and the local heritage community in Valparaíso, which are concentrated in the Historical Museum and Cultural Centre of Placilla. For over 10 years now, we have been fighting for the recognition of the heritage value of these sites, which currently have no official protection status but have become an anchor of social and cultural identity for the local population.

The lecture is part of my Chilean research project ANID-FONDECYT INICIACIÓN 11230957 in cooperation with the Bauhaus University Weimar, the TU Berlin and the Berlin Centre for Industrial Heritage.
