Desde el Laboratorio de Geografía y Patrimonio, trabajamos sobre la interpretación de las manifestaciones territoriales de la modernidad y la industrialización desde una perspectiva postcolonialista, con el afán de contribuir proactivamente a una construcción social del patrimonio que ilustre las relaciones de poder desiguales inherentes a nuestros entornos locales, tanto en el Norte como en el Sur global. Sobre esta base hacemos nuevas propuestas para narrativos “glocales” conscientes que complementan y se contradicen con la gran mayoría de las ofertas turísticas existentes y los valores que transmiten, invitándonos a una reflexión autocrítica como sociedad global, cuyo futuro ojalá sea más justo y más pacífico.

La investigación cruza distintas lecturas locales con una perspectiva global crítica, con un enfoque particular en la interpretación de lo que han sido la ciudad-puerto mundial de Valparaíso y la Electrópolis Berlín a inicios del siglo XX. Para ello, los vínculos académicos del cual dispone el laboratorio a nivel mundial sirven como sólido fundamento, junto a las cooperaciones con actores locales en ambas ciudades. Es gracias a estas redes consolidadas que se pueden realizar las actividades que se presentan en esta página web. El éxito se debe además al hecho de aplicar una metodología de investigación-docencia, coordinando a estudiantes de pregrado y empoderando sus capacidades como jóvenes investigadores.

Im Labor für Geographie und Kulturerbe arbeiten wir an der Interpretation der territorialen Manifestationen der Moderne und der Industrialisierung aus einer postkolonialen Perspektive mit dem Ziel, aktiv zu einer sozialen Konstruktion des Kulturerbes beizutragen, die die ungleichen Machtverhältnisse in unseren lokalen Umgebungen verdeutlicht – und dies sowohl im globalen Norden wie auch im Süden. Auf dieser Basis machen wir neue Vorschläge für bewusste “glokale” Narrative, die die überwiegende Mehrheit der bestehenden Tourismusangebote und die von ihnen vermittelten Werte ergänzen, ihnen auch widersprechen und uns so zu einer selbstkritischen Reflexion als globale Gesellschaft einladen, deren Zukunft hoffentlich eine gerechtere und friedlichere sein wird.

Die Forschung kreuzt verschiedene lokale Lesarten mit einer kritischen globalen Perspektive; ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf der Interpretation der Welthafenstadt Valparaiso und der Elektropolis Berlin im frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhundert. Dazu dienen die weltweiten akademischen Verbindungen des Labors als solide Grundlage, ebenso wie die Zusammenarbeit mit lokalen Akteuren in beiden Städten. Diese konsolidierten Netzwerke ermöglichen die Durchführung der hier auf dieser Website vorgestellten Aktivitäten. Der Erfolg ist zudem auf die Anwendung einer kombinierten Forschungs- und Lehrmethodik zurückzuführen, die Studierende einbindet und ihre Fähigkeiten als junge Forscherinnen und Forscher stärkt.

In the Geography and Heritage Lab, we work on interpreting the territorial manifestations of modernity and industrialisation from a postcolonialist perspective, with the aim of actively contributing to a social construction of heritage that highlights the unequal power relations in our local environments – both in the global North and South. On this basis, we make new proposals for conscious “glocal” narratives that complement, as well as contradict, the vast majority of existing tourism offerings and the values they convey, inviting us to a self-critical reflection as a global society whose future will hopefully be more just and more peaceful.

The research crosses different local readings with a critical global perspective, with a particular focus on the interpretation of what the world port-city of Valparaiso and the Electropolis Berlin were at the beginning of the twentieth century. In this context, the Lab’s worldwide academic connections serve as a solid foundation, as does the collaboration with local actors in both cities. These consolidated networks make it possible to carry out the activities we present on this website. The success is also due to the application of a combined research and teaching methodology that engages undergraduate students and empowers them as young researchers.
